If you are using acupuncture with your insurance (called American Specialty Health), only one of our clinicians is contracted with insurance.

Because of our contract, only limited services are available.

For chronic pain:

Kaiser plans

  • Most Kaiser plans allow 5 visits to start.

  • 1 visit is for an evaluation (talking about your pain and making a plan).

  • 4 visits are for acupuncture treatments.

  • You can have another evaluation only if acupuncture helped and you want to ask for more visits.

  • Evaluations and acupuncture are not done on the same day.

Kaiser Medi-Cal plans

  • You can have 2 acupuncture visits each month.

  • Your plan does not cover evaluations, re-evaluations, or other services.

Some Medicare Plans:

  • Some Medicare plans only cover acupuncture for one problem:

    • None-Specific chronic low back pain 

  • There is a maximum number of visits per year.

  • No other conditions are covered.

How often acupuncture is provided for insurance patients. 

  • For pain acupuncture is provided 2 times a week for 2–3 weeks, then we check progress (re-evaluation is only provide if your insurance covers the services).

  • Patients with chronic pain, lifelong pain, who have not obtained relief after steroid injections, physical therapy, or medication as scheduled once a week for pain management (unless they want to pay out of pocket for more visits than their insurance covers).

Your insurance can tell you:

  • What health problems they will pay for

  • How many acupuncture visits you are allowed

  • If they will check your care after 5 visits to decide if you can have more

After 5 appointments, your insurance may review your care and decide whether more visits are approved.

  • Most insurance plans do not cover telehealth visits (phone or video).
    If you have questions, please schedule an in-person appointment.
  • Dr. Pourhassani, DACM, LAc does not provide primary care services under your insurance plan. We do not order MRI’s, other imaging, or labs for patients utilizing American Speciality Health. You’re responsible for scheduling an appointment with a PCP, or a specialist for the diagnosis, and management of your pain condition. Only acupuncture for pain management is covered through your insurance with Dr. Pourhassani, DACM, LAc, QME.

    • Your insurance can give you a list of primary care doctors who work with your plan.

Out-of-network services are still available for patients who received out-of-network services previously (2008–2021), which are not subjected to the above limitations.
